This month we caught up with Barb & Bob Brosius working with a team in Porter, TX. They are newer volunteers at Volunteer Christian Builders and they wanted to share their experience. You can learn more about them and why they choose Volunteer Christian Builders by reading below.
Thank you Barb & Bob for volunteering and for taking the time to share with us your experience and why you love traveling with a purpose!
Q.Where are you from?
A. We are from Winthrop, Maine.
Q. How long have you been retired?
A. We have been retired for 4 years. Before we retired we were working at a Christian school in Singapore. When we came back to the US at age 63, we decided it was too difficult to get a good IT/teaching job at our age so we retired. Going from a place with such a strong impact in lives and spreading the Gospel, it was hard to adjust to life without that purpose. Volunteer Christian Builders is filling that void.
Q. Can you tell us a little bit about your family? A. We have been married for 47 years. We have 4 married children, living in Maine, Florida, Oregon and Saudi Arabia. We have 6 grandchildren. Q. Do you have any special hobbies?
A. We both like the outdoors, hiking, walking, and kayaking. We also read a lot. And we love to travel.
Q. How did you find out about Volunteer Christian Builders?
A. We did a Google Search. We've been looking for something to do, more than volunteering at various things with our local church.
Q. What made you choose Volunteer Christian Builders?
A. First, we looked at the web page. We were impressed with the mission and agreed with their emphasis on furthering the kingdom of God through various construction jobs. Travel with a purpose is very accurate. When we expressed interest, we got a very quick response and there were available jobs in our time frame. Finally, we liked that they allowed women to work on the construction job if they chose to.
Q. What was your first impression of Volunteer Christian Builders? A. First impression was excellent. All contact was positive and informative. The first job was a great experience. The people were friendly and we quickly felt part of the team. The process to join was very easy and understandable. Q. How many jobs have you been on with Volunteer Christian Builders since joining?
A. We have been on two jobs, and signed up for two more this winter.
Q. What is your favorite thing about working on jobs at Volunteer Christian Builders?
A. We have 3 favorites. 1.Doing something that is valuable, long-lasting impact. 2. Becoming good friends with some really wonderful people. 3. And less important, but still part of the draw, the chance to travel to new places.
Q. What would you tell others who are looking at Volunteer Christian Builders?
A. This is a wonderful opportunity. You won't regret giving this a try.
